From Meeting Room to Stage: Mastering the Leadership Presentation

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟳𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

Something even more terrifying than snakes, height and yes, even death.

The answer is – public speaking.

If three-quarters of the world is afraid of public speaking, that means one in four has an immediate competitive edge – simply because you dare to stand up and speak.

But here’s the truth: public speaking isn’t just about being on stage in front of 2,000 people.

It’s every moment you express an idea in front of others – leading a team meeting, presenting a budget to your senior executives, or pitching a proposal to your clients.

Any time you speak in public, you are practising the art and science of public speaking.

The great news is that mastering public speaking is a skill that everyone can learn, progress, and eventually master.

Before we go into the how, let’s lay some foundations for what makes a powerful public speaking.

Jess Ekstrom, in her TEDx Talk on the topic of “The Secret to Great Public Speaking”, used a brilliant metaphor:

Are you a “spotlight speaker” or a “lighthouse speaker”?

Spotlight speakers shine the light on themselves.

Lighthouse speakers focus on illuminating the audience.

As my coach Dori taught me, always think WIIFM —What is In It For Me?

Before writing your script, reflect on these five questions:

• Who is the audience in the room?

• What do they already know (or not know) about your topic?

• What else have they heard from similar forums or competitors?

• What do they care about – their biggest pain points, hopes and expectations?

• How do you want them to feel when they leave?

Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle explains how great leaders inspire action: start with why, then how, lastly what.

Many presenters do the opposite – they open with facts (what), explain methods (how), and forget to establish why the audience should care.

Your why sets the compass for your audience to follow.

If your “WHY” is the compass, your “storytelling” framework is the map.

A great presentation is never about a series of slides – it is an intentional journey that you take your audience on.

Choose an outfit that feels like you — comfortable, confident, and true to your personality. Confidence begins as a feeling, and how you feel always shapes how you speak.

If you’re stepping on stage, a few practical notes to keep your presence sharp:

• Fitted tailoring: clean silhouette under lights

• Simple colour blocks:  clear, professional presence

• Avoid: bright white or tight patterns

• Avoid: clanky accessories or jangly bracelets that interfere with
