From Self-Doubt to TEDx: A Journey Through Relationship Building

I stood frozen in a ballroom in San Francisco, overwhelmed by self-doubt.

It was my first global networking event as a Management Trainee in the luxury industry.

In a room full of elite professionals, I couldn’t stop thinking about my humble upbringing (I grew up in Yong Chun, a small town with less than 100,000 population), my non-branded outfit (everyone else in the room looked so polished), and my far-from-perfect English accent.

Twenty minutes in, I locked myself in the restroom and cried.

That evening, I made myself a quiet yet firm promise:

If I wanted to thrive in this industry, I needed to overcome my fear of networking and stop seeing myself as small.

I stood on the TEDx stage – sharing that very story, still with tears in my eyes.

Relationship building hasn’t just shaped my corporate career.

It has transformed my personal life – and now, my entrepreneurial journey.

Today, I want to take you behind the scenes. Because the process itself was relationship-building in action.

Relationship building is a commitment to growth.

I rewrote the script more than ten times. Each version brought me closer to the story I need to tell.

Relationship building is about intentional craft.

My dear friend and storytelling master, Chuck, challenged me to clarify my message – with purpose, intention and heart.

My coach Dori helped me reconnect with both the timid girl in that restroom and the confident entrepreneur I’ve become.

My husband Andrew stood by me along the whole journey and reminded me that my authentic voice matters, no matter the accent.
