The Power of Generosity

Last week I was in London – celebrating the launch of my dear friend Liz’s business, and meeting clients and ambassadors. During the trip I experienced fancy dinners, 5-star hotels, avant-garde boutiques – but it was the generosity that I encountered that were the highlight of my trip.

Let me share it with you:

Vanessa, The Clienteling Academy’s ambassador, lives in Devon and had agreed to come down to spend time together. Then her child fell ill, and her husband was called to London for work.

Instead of cancelling on me, she arranged a babysitter, brought the whole family down, and made it in time — joining every business meeting and client dinner we’d planned.

A core reason for the trip was Liz – my partner – launching her business and organising her first event. I wanted to explore a collaboration with her too. My hotel sat a little outside central London, so I offered to meet her halfway. She insisted on travelling all the way to me, giving up her morning to make it easy for me.

The next day evening I invited my friend Tatiana to have dinner. When I asked where we should meet, she said, “I am not far from you; I will come to get you in the car”. I was really touched by her kind gesture, and it was the beginning of a generous evening.

As a successful woman entrepreneur who has built and sold businesses, she generously offered valuable advice – how to thrive as a woman entrepreneur, how to protect a founder’s energy and how to build authentic, powerful mission work and so on.

So what’s the story thread here?

The small act outperforms the grand gesture.

In luxury, we tend to think of generosity as scale — the hotel upgrade, the private preview, the extravagant birthday cake that matches a sizeable spend.

But think back to the last time you felt truly touched. Was it a grand gesture, or a small, heartfelt one? The same is true for your clients. The big gestures are expected and can be easily replicated, but the small, heartfelt ones that show you pay attention will touch their hearts, and be remembered for years.

Here is how:

The associate who sends the clients off with warmth even they didn’t purchase; Who brings back a small souvenir from a personal trip that resonates; Who sends a photo the moment something arrives that fits a client’s preference.

Anticipation is generosity with foresight.

Your attention. Your memory. Your kindness. Remembering the name of their pets. The stress she mentioned in passing.

A client can buy the product anywhere. They cannot buy being seen.

This is the most renewable resource you have, and the one most often left unused.

This is the one most leaders miss.

An advisor who feels seen by you will make clients feel seen without being told to –  A genuine word of praise. Remembering their milestones. Letting them take a day off when they feel unwell. 

Your people are the most powerful fuel you have.

A single remembered detail becomes a story a client tells a friend.

A single act of grace toward a team member becomes the standard that person sets for everyone they serve.

Before you ask your people to be more attentive with clients, try one small experiment this week: do one small, generous, specific thing for one of them.
