The Art of Questioning

A key trait of a top clienteling performer is their ability to ask powerful questions.

The heart of luxury lies in meaningful human interaction. With the right intention, great questions do more than break the ice – they unlock stories, surface emotions, and reveal true motivations.

This week, I’m sharing seven types of questions that will elevate your clienteling conversations – and deepen relationships in a human and meaningful way.

Powerful questioning does not equal interrogating. It is about everyday curiosity, embedded naturally into your conversations.

Ask with presence. Listen actively. And build your million-dollar blackbook by noting what truly matters to each cilent, encounter by encounter.

These are great conversation starters when you first meet someone. Over time, they help you build a nuanced client persona—based on what truly matters across different areas of their life.

– Who is your favourite designer, and what do you love about their creation?

– What is your most preferred holiday destination, and what makes it so special?

– What is your most memorable luxury event, and what did you appreciate about it?

Understanding what matters to your clients lays the foundation for a personalised, trust-based relationship.

– What is important to you about …?

– What matters the most to you?

– How could I best service you in this situation?

As Marilyn once said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she will conquer the world.” Invite your client to imagine and dream – luxury is often an emotional journey.

– If it were perfect, what would it look like?

– What are you longing for as you show up in this outfit?

– Who inspires your style, and what about them inspires you?

Outstanding clienteling expert does not just take the client’s words. Instead, they use client insights and expertise to gently surprise them – in a delightful way.

– How would you love to be different?

– Have you ever been delightfully surprised in a retail store? If so what was it about?

– How would your best friend describe you?

Many clients appreciate a light-hearted retail therapy. Discover what brings a smile to your client’s face.

– What is your “go-to” drink on a happy Friday?

– If we were to organise different events, which ones would you not want to miss?

– What made you crack a smile recently?

Loyalty grows when clients feel heard. Keep learning from them and show that you care by acting on what they share.

– What have you enjoyed with us so far?

– How could we do it differently?

– What’s top of your mind that we can focus on to improve?

While being mindful of giving more space for the clients to share, opening up ourselves plays a role in building mutually trusting relationships.
